2026-30 Foundational Research Priorities
In 2026, the Art Research Institute will focus its inquiry on a small number of converging questions that feel both urgent and unfinished. These priorities guide what we study, create, and convene—without foreclosing where the work may lead.

Inner Life in an Age of Acceleration
In 2026, the Art Research Institute will focus its inquiry on a small number of converging questions that feel both urgent and unfinished. These priorities guide what we study, create, and convene—without foreclosing where the work may lead.
Key concern: What forms of inner life remain possible when speed becomes the default moral climate?
Place, Presence, and Civic Soul
We will deepen our inquiry into how geography, cities, and lived places shape psychic and moral life. This work treats place not as backdrop, but as an active participant in cultural formation—especially in contexts marked by historical rupture or unresolved inheritance.
Key concern: What does it mean to belong to a place without idealizing or abandoning it?
05
Moral Imagination Beyond Ideology
We will study alternatives to ideological thinking that preserve moral seriousness without collapsing into certainty, scapegoating, or simplification. This includes research into love, conscience, responsibility, and covenant as lived, relational forces rather than abstract positions.
Key concern: How do people learn to act ethically when clear answers are unavailable?
04
Trauma, Memory, and Cultural Formation
We will investigate how individual and collective trauma shape culture, institutions, and moral imagination—often invisibly. Drawing from depth psychology and lived experience, this work attends to how memory is carried, displaced, or denied, and how repair might occur without erasure.
Key concern: How does what has not been metabolized continue to govern what we build?
03
Art as Research, Not Representation
We will continue developing art-making—especially painting and writing—as a legitimate mode of inquiry rather than illustration or commentary. This includes studying process, material, ritual, and repetition as ways knowledge emerges through making.
Key concern: What does art know that explanation alone cannot reach?
02
Inner Life in an Age of Acceleration
We will explore how attention, imagination, and emotional life are shaped under conditions of speed, fragmentation, and constant signal. This includes research into practices that restore depth, presence, and the capacity to stay with experience without numbing or collapse.
Key concern: What forms of inner life remain possible when speed becomes the default moral climate?

An Open Invitation
The Art Research institute welcomes collaborators, readers, artists, clinicians, thinkers, and institutions who sense that something essential has gone missing - and who are willing to approach that loss with patience, courage, and imagination.
We are not here to perform answers.
We are here to keep questions alive long enough for something real to answer back.
