Oil on panel, 18x24
This painting holds a vertical tension between ascent and descent. A dense blue field gathers in the lower half of the canvas, worked with heavy, directional strokes that convey compression, gravity, and accumulating force. Above it, a broad expanse of ochre, gold, and earthen red opens outward, luminous yet unsettled, as light presses its way through resistance and thickness.
The meeting line between these zones operates as a threshold rather than a horizon. It is uneven, charged, and alive with transition, marking a point where one state yields to another through pressure rather than clarity. Forms in the lower field approach the figural, carrying bodily suggestion without settling into fixed identities. The upper field remains atmospheric, sensed before it is named, allowing perception to hover between substance and apparition.
Created during a period of altered perception, the work treats vision as encounter. It registers contact with unseen presences, ancestral memory, and what has elsewhere been named the daimonic or invisible order of things. These forces enter the painting through density, contrast, and suspension, shaping the image without resolving into symbols or figures.
Within The Gateway Series, this painting functions as a crossing point between worlds, earth and heaven, visible and unseen, human and other-than-human. It sustains the moment of contact itself, where attention intensifies and the ordinary thins, opening briefly onto something older, wider, and still in motion.
